Tom is a physician certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He received his MD from the University of Washington School of Medicine and completed a residency in psychiatry at Oregon Health & Science University. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.

For over twenty years he has worked primarily in community mental health settings and also maintained a private practice for many years. In June 2016 he completed the two-year spiritual direction training program at the Franciscan Spiritual Center in Milwaukie.

“I view each individual as consisting of biological, psychological, social, and spiritual components. When conditions like depression or anxiety arise, all four areas need to be addressed. The biological area might include the prescribing of psychiatric medications, but also might involve diet, exercise, and attention to one’s overall physical health. I see my role as collaborating with the person, his or her primary counselor, and other medical providers to address each component. I believe this holistic approach is essential in the promotion of health and healing.”
